Spinal Cord Society

SCS
TWIN CITIES CHAPTER

SCS has only one purpose: To find a cure for chronic spinal cord injury paralysis.

The Spinal Cord Society was founded in 1978 by Dr. Charles Carson, a geologist injured in a private plane crash. At that time there existed little research or even interest in spinal cord injury treatment and cure.

SCS quickly grew to over 200 chapters worldwide. We are one of those chapters. Comprised of the spinal cord injured and their families and friends, these chapters raise funds with a variety of activities. All members volunteer their time and energy.

SCS is a non-profit organization that receives no government funds, nor do they receive money from the United Way. Instead, SCS relies upon its chapter network, so the money comes with no strings attached. Because this money is hard earned, SCS spends it wisely. One hundred percent of all money designated for research goes to research. The June 15, 1992 US News & World Report listed SCS as among the best self-help medical groups in the country.

Chapter Mission Statement:
"Bringing together the people of the spinal cord injured community and other interested parties who are determined to find a cure for spinal cord injuries and are willing to participate in that effort."

Our chapter has two primary purposes:

One is to educate others about the need, necessity and reality of spinal cord injury cure research.

The other is to raise the money to fund our SCS research center. It is up to us to keep this important and groundbreaking research moving forward. That is our primary function and the main reason this chapter exists. Without us, SCS wouldn't exist, and without SCS, cure research wouldn't be where it is today.

By joining our chapter you can become a part of this grand adventure. Rather than sitting around hoping for cure or talking about cure, you can be an integral part of making it happen.

Whether you can raise dollars and cents or hundreds and thousands, this is the place where it can do the most good.

What makes SCS so different?

It’s the only place with a chapter network. Not only do our members raise money, they also can get reports directly from the research center and have an input into how the money is used.

Our chapters are all volunteer. Together with a small headquarters staff this means that much more of your money goes directly to research.

We are the only cure organization with our own independent research center. That is a HUGE difference. It means that our researchers work for US and that now they can concentrate solely on spinal cord injury research without the distractions and competing agendas of universities or other multi-purpose research facilities.

SCS only funds research directly related to a chronic cure. That is another very important difference (See- ABOUT OUR RESEARCH)

Above all, we are not trying to make a career out of finding a cure. There is nothing we will enjoy more than the day when we put ourselves out of business.

For a long time SCS was a lone voice in the wilderness. Now, this lonesome movement is becoming a tidal wave of hope and expectation. It’s time for you to get on board and help us ride this ship into port!

It All Depends On You

When you join our chapter you will start receiving our quarterly Chapter Newsletter. This will keep you informed on all our chapter fundraisers along with occasional research update recaps and other information relevant to our cause. You can also get e-mail updates on breaking news as we get it. You’ll also be joining a group of like-minded people with whom you can share the experience.

You’ll then want to get the monthly National Newsletter ($30/year US) with all the reports directly from our researchers at the Center. This will keep you up to date with what’s going on in the world of spinal cord injury cure research and let you see exactly what your money is doing.

There is no fee to belong to our chapter. The only requirement is your participation in one or more of our annual fundraisers or some fundraising project of your own. Unlike most of the other cure organizations out there, we’re not looking to take the money out of your pocket. We’re just like you and know that many of you don’t have a lot to spare. But there are many ways you can get it and many people who would be glad to donate if they could. We’re just asking you to try.

So come on along on the most important and rewarding venture on which you could possibly embark since the day you were injured. The only thing you have to lose is your paralysis.
