The Spinal Cord Society was founded in 1978 by Dr. Charles Carson, a geologist injured in a private plane crash. At that time there existed little research or even interest in spinal cord injury cure. President Reagan paid tribute to Dr. Carson in his 1984 State of the Union address (see video).

SCS quickly grew to over 200 chapters worldwide. We are one of those chapters. Comprised of the spinal cord injured and their families and friends, these chapters raise funds with a variety of activities. All members volunteer their time and energy.

SCS is a 501c-3 non-profit organization that receives no government funding, with all it's associated red tape and restrictions. Instead, SCS relies upon its chapter network, so the money comes with no strings attached. Because this money is hard earned, SCS spends it wisely. One hundred percent of all money designated for research goes to research. The June 15, 1992 US News & World Report listed SCS as among the best self-help medical groups in the country.

This symbol stands for curing paralysis.

Its genesis began in 1978 where it heralded a new era. Its originators saw that medicine was only offering them endless “care”, with little thought of or hope for a cure. They realized the only way to end their immobilization was to lead the way themselves. Those who wanted a cure organized into a volunteer, self-help group called the Spinal Cord Society.

Then, they began to change perceptions.

SCS ignored the skeptics and the critics. They persevered when other disability groups said a cure was impossible. They helped pioneer chronic injury cure research. SCS was always well ahead of its time in bringing cure research forward---to where it is today.

Other similar groups have since seen the possibility of cure, but while they focus mainly on acute repairs and access issues, SCS has always stayed true to it‘s founding roots even if, at times, that has been the more difficult road. That’s because “Chronic Injury to CURE” means we concentrate solely on our goal of a complete cure for chronic, adult spinal cord injury.
